Our long time member Bob Godfrey worked tirelessly to get a White Seabass pen built and installed so we in Marina Del Rey Anglers could participate in the Hubbs-Seaworld hatchery's White Seabass program. Out pens have been in the water in Marina Del Rey over 17 years now.
Bob got the grants. Got the thing built. He got the club active in this very worthy aquaculture program (OREHP). After running it for a few years he turned the program over to Paul Simon who did a bang up job for many years caring for the program and the fish. His work with United Anglers and Hubbs earned him a great reputation in the conservation minded Sportfishing community. When he passed the pen to Darrell Pickford who was a good pen pal leader. He passed it to Jack Greger. Now Jack is stepping down.
We need a new leader for 2014 to coordinate the Pen Pals and see to it that the truck delivering the next batch of baby fish is greeted with sufficient staff of volunteers to do the job.
If you have been a Pen Pal before you know how cool this program is. You know it does not take a lot of time. It does take a bit of commitment and follow through. Please consider stepping forward.
We have released a lot of fish. Nearly 100,000 fish. That is saying something when each batch is around 2,500 to 3,100 fish. We have had some the most heathly fish of the whole program up and down the coast. Partly because we have dedicated volunteers who show up daily to care for the fish. Also becouse we have a good hard bottom pen. Not to mention we have good placement on the main channel where the fish get enouth water movement and high oxigyn levels. This is a very good thing for the health and success of the program.
